Release: Cascade 1.0

FIRST COMPREHENSIVE CASCADING STYLE SHEETS EDITOR FOR THE WEB

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 16, 1997 (Mactivity/Web): Media Design in·Progress today announced the release of Cascade, the first comprehensive Cascading Style Sheets Editor. Cascade is a Macintosh application that facilitates design of the presentation style of websites on any platform. Using Cascade, Webmasters and HTML authors can take full advantage of Cascading Style Sheets without knowing the technical specifications. A demonstration copy of Cascade can be downloaded from http://interaction.in-progress.com/cascade

"CSS is a powerful tool. It can alter the look and feel of an entire web site simply by changing a single style sheet," said Håkon Lie, co-architect of CSS and Style Sheets Lead at W3C. "Applications like Cascade makes it possible for webmasters and HTML authors to easily take advantage of Cascading Style Sheets."

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet mechanism developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to meet the needs of Web designers and users. It is supported by web browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer, and enjoys wide industry backing. A CSS style sheet can set fonts, colors, white space and other layout aspects of an HTML page in an efficient and flexible manner. Cascading Style Sheets give webmasters better control over presentation style, makes site management more efficient and leads to a more adaptable and accessible web. Using CSS, webmasters and authors can easily maintain a consistent design throughout a web site.

"Cascade allows webmasters and HTML authors to conveniently create their own stylesheets using a dialog on the Mac. Cascade's unique ability to emulate CSS gives webmasters the advantage of making use of CSS today even before it is supported in all browsers" explains Terje Norderhaug, President of in·Progress™.

Cascade provides a dialog on the Mac to define any style setting that can be expressed in CSS. The style sheets can be saved to file in standard CSS format or be automatically added to the HTML pages of a website. Cascade can even automatically apply a Cascading Style Sheet to an HTML document in such a way that the style sheet is emulated for older browsers that don't support CSS. Thus webmasters can employ and benefit from Cascading Style Sheets today even before the majority have upgraded to a CSS compliant browser.

Cascade is listed at $69, with an introductory price of $39 until the end of July.
